GCE AS- & A-levels FAQs

Question:What are GCE AS- & A-levels?
Answer:Advanced Subsidiary (AS) levels can be taken on their own, or combined with A2s to make an A-level. The AS-level is the first half of an Advanced-level (A-level) qualification, while the A2 just the name for the second half. A-levels are highly respected qualifications, and they count towards the requirements for further education.

Question:How many do I study?
Answer:In the first year of study, AS-levels are taken. In the second year, you can decide which of the AS-levels you want to specialise in by taking the relevant A2, to turn the final qualification into A-levels. Students usually specialise in three AS-levels to come away with three A-levels.

Question:How long does it take to do them?
Answer:AS-levels take a year to complete. It normally takes two years to complete A-levels (the first half of this time will be spent completing the AS-level, and the second half will be spent completing the A2).
