| Answer: | A BTEC First is the second step on the BTEC ladder. It’s a good introduction to BTEC for people who have some GCSEs (for example), or for people who have been out of education for some time and who wish to get back in. |

| Answer: | You only study for one BTEC qualification at a time. This lets you build and focus your knowledge and skills in a particular area. |

| Answer: | The BTEC First Diploma has 6 units – there are a set number of core units but most subjects give you a choice of which other units to take. |

| Question: | How long does it take to do one? |
| Answer: | The BTEC First Diploma has 360 learning hours. The qualification normally takes a year to complete because students tend to study full time. |

| Answer: | You can study for a BTEC First at your nearest approved centre. To find out which one is closest to you, please contact your local Edexcel regional office. |

| Answer: | Yes, you can study for a BTEC First as you wish. If you want to study part time, full time or another way, there is no problem. The most important thing is that you study for the right number of hours (360 hours for this qualification). |

| Question: | What can I do after I finish a BTEC First? |
| Answer: | Most students will go on to study a BTEC National after their BTEC First. This will give them more knowledge and experience for working or studying. However, if you decide to take a BTEC First you don’t have to carry on taking BTECs – you can revert to GCSEs and A levels if you prefer. |

| Answer: | Anyone can take a BTEC First – we would expect that students aged around 16 would be interested, as well as people at work who may want to get back into education. |

| Answer: | There are lots of subjects at BTEC First level. You can take one in Applied Science, Business, Care, Design, IT, Performing Arts, Public Services, Sport, Sport & Exercise Science and Travel & Tourism. There will be even more choices in the near future – watch this space. |

| Answer: | BTEC Firsts are designed to build or develop your knowledge about your area of study. Many people have gone straight into employment after finishing a BTEC First, just as many have gone on to study a BTEC National and beyond. |
